The 72 pentads is a traditional Japanese calendar system originally devised in ancient China that depicts the subtle changes in nature over the seasons by dividing a year into seventy-two five-day periods. When the conditions are right, a phenomenon known as kagiroi, where the sky turns bright red for about an hour, can be observed as the sun rises on cold winter mornings in Nara Prefecture.
