Science Agora Channel
English title: Talks on the universe, subatomic particles, disasters, natural resources and archaeology through international dialogue. Contributor: Embassy of Hungary, UTokyo-MUOGRAPHIX How can studying science topics like cosmic ray derived muography have relevance in our daily lives? Muography was created with a fusion of cosmology, elementary particles, and earth and planetary science knowledge. It allows us to get a glimpse outside of our everyday time and space axis to a cosmological time and space axis. Elementary particles are the building blocks of all matter in the universe, so it seems fitting that these particles can be adapted as probes to help us discover new things about fields as diverse as technology, earth science, and societal issues. We can gain valuable new perspectives on global and cultural topics that deeply influence us both individually and collectively such as natural disaster prediction/protection, natural resource utilization and archeological heritage. Moreover, the muon (the elementary particle used as a probe for muography) has universal characteristics. It is a naturally abundant resource that can be adapted to many purposes in almost every area of the Earth that affects human societies (the entire surface of the Earth as well as in region accessible to humans underground and underwater). Our continued development and survival are dependent on better understanding our environment and on future cooperation between different cultures and ideas to protect it. Practical applications of elementary particle physics can contribute directly to this process as well as being a symbol itself of the worldwide movement to connect global communities to solve global problems and to solve local problems globally.
